William "Willie" Ferdie Brown (* 2. December 1940 in Yazoo City , Mississippi ; † 22. October 2019 in Tracy , California ) was an American American football poker players in the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL). He played as cornerback with the Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders . He won Super Bowl XI with the Raiders and later, as the Raiders' assistant coach, Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XVIII . Brown was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984.

Willie Brown graduated from Grambling State University . After graduating, he was hired by the Houston Oilers . The team released him during a training camp. Brown then received a contract offer from the Denver Broncos. He played for the Denver team as a cornerback. After he was initially only a substitute in this position, he was used as a starter after six match days in the 1963 season . The team was unsuccessful that year. Even after Mac Speedie had taken over the coaching office for the team from Colorado during the 1964 season , the team could not improve. Brown did not win a title with the Broncos. Before the season, the team gave him to the Oakland Raiders trained by John Rauch .

In 1967 the Raiders could win 13 of 14 games in the American Football League . With this result they moved into the AFL final against the Houston Oilers . The Oilers lost 7:40, with Brown intercepting a pass from the opposing quarterback in the game . By winning the Raiders qualified for the "AFL-NFL Championship Game" , which was later renamed Super Bowl II . Opponents in the Super Bowl were the Green Bay Packers , trained by Vince Lombardi , who beat the Raiders 33:14.

In the 1968 season, the Raiders moved into the play-offs , where they met the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Play-off game . Brown scored an interception against quarterback Len Dawson , the Raiders won the argument 41-6. The victory meant the return to the AFL final, but there the Raiders were defeated by the New York Jets trained by Weeb Ewbank with 23:27.

In 1969, John Madden took over as coach of the Raiders. The team from Oakland won twelve of 14 games in this game round in the regular season . In the play-offs they first met the Houston Oilers, who had no chances in their 7: 56 defeat. Brown managed another interception. Opponents in the following AFL final were the Kansas City Chiefs, supervised by Hank Stram , who got the upper hand with 17: 7.

Also in 1970, 1973, 1974 and 1975 Willie Brown and his raiders were denied entry into the Super Bowl. In 1970 the Raiders played in the play-offs against the Miami Dolphins . Don Shula's team suffered a 14:21 defeat against the Raiders, with Brown able to utilize an interception from Bob Griese for the decisive touchdown for his team. In the first AFC Championship Game, the team from Oakland lost to the Baltimore Colts 17:27.

Also in 1973 Brown was able to enter himself in the NFL record books. In the play-off game against the Pittsburgh Steelers he caught a pass from Terry Bradshaw and scored a touchdown. The win against the Steelers was followed by a 10:27 final defeat against the Miami Dolphins , with Brown again succeeding in an interception.

In 1974 and 1975 the Raiders had to admit defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game with 1:24 and 10:16.

The series of defeats in the final ended for Brown in 1976. The team had lost only one of 14 games in the regular season and moved with this result in the play-offs. Opponents in the divisional play-off game were the New England Patriots , who were narrowly defeated 24:21. In the AFC Championship Game, John Madden's team met again on the Chuck Noll- supervised Steelers. The team of the Raiders around Gene Upshaw , Ken Stabler , Dave Casper and Willie Brown managed to take revenge for the previous two defeats in the final and they won with 24: 7. The opponents in the following Super Bowl XI were the Minnesota Vikings . Brown was able to prove his qualities as a cornerback again. He intercepted a pass from Fran Tarkenton and carried the ball over a distance of 75 yards for a touchdown in the Vikings end zone . The distance covered of 75 yards was the longest space gain achieved in a Super Bowl by an interception up to Super Bowl XLIII . The Minnesota team left the field with a 14:32 loss.

In 1977 the Raiders could not defend their title. They faced the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game and left the field with a 17:20 defeat.

Willie Brown ended his playing career after the 1978 season. He scored 39 interceptions for the Oakland Raiders during the regular season and is still number 1 on the club's record list (as of 2014) - together with Lester Hayes since 1986 .

Trainer

John Madden left the Raiders after the 1978 season and was replaced by Tom Flores . Brown became his assistant coach and was responsible for the defensive backs . In this role he and his team won the XV and XVIII . In Super Bowl XV, the defensive backs he supervised were able to achieve three interceptions against quarterback Ron Jaworski . The Philadelphia Eagles led by this lost the game 10:27. Also the quarterback of the Washington Redskins , Joe Theismann , threw two interceptions in the Super Bowl XVIII to Mike Haynes and Jack Squirek . Squirek managed a 5-yard run into the Redskins' end zone with the caught ball. They finally lost with 9:38. After the 1988 round, Brown left the Raiders, but returned to the club in 1995. He served in the Oakland Raiders organization until his death in October 2019.

Honors

Willie Brown played nine times in the Pro Bowl or in the AFL All-Star Game, the final game of the best players of the season. He was elected all-pro eleven times . He is a member of the AFL All-Time Team , NFL 1970s All-Decade Team , Pro Football Hall of Fame , Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame , Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, and African-American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
