David John "Dave" Casper (born September 26, 1951 in Bemidji , Minnesota ), nickname : The Ghost , is a former American American football player. He played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) with the Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders , the Houston Oilers and the Minnesota Vikings .

Dave Casper was born in Bemidji. After his birth, his family moved several times and he visited first in Elgin, Illinois , and in his last year of school in Chilton, Wisconsin , the High School . In addition to football, he played baseball , basketball and was a golfer at school . In 1969, his school team managed to win all games. His team scored 363 points in the season and never gave up a single point.

Player career

college

After graduating from high school, the Catholic educated Dave Casper received a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame . He played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 1971 to 1973 under Head Coach Ara Parseghian . Initially as an offensive tackle , before moving to the position of tight end in his senior year at university . In 1973 he was able to win the Sugar Bowl with his team against the team from the University of Alabama . After the Fighting Irish won 24:23, the American press declared the team the national champions . This year, Casper also served as vice captain of the team and became the All American , and the offense - MVP of the Fighting Irish selected. In all three years of play, he was recognized by his college for his athletic achievements. In 1974, he also played in the College All-Star Game and the Hula Bowl, another selection game.

NFL

Dave Casper was selected by the John Madden- trained Las Vegas Raiders-Oakland Raiders in 1974 in the second round of the NFL Draft in 45th place. Madden used Casper as a tight end in the team's offense.

After the 1974 and 1975 season, Casper and the Raiders had to admit defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers , supervised by Chuck Noll , in the AFC Championship Game with 24:13 and 16:10.

Casper's series of defeats in the final ended in 1976 . The team had only lost one of 14 games in the regular season and moved into the play-offs . Opponents in the divisional play-off game were the New England Patriots , who could be defeated with 24:21. Casper was able to catch four passes in the game for a space gain of 47 yards . In the AFC Championship Game, John Madden's team met the Steelers again. The team around Gene Upshaw , Ken Stabler and Willie Brown managed to take revenge for the two previous defeats in the final and won with 24: 7. In 1977 the Raiders could not defend their Super Bowl title. They faced the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game and left the field with a 20-17 defeat. Casper had convinced in the game anyway. He caught five passes for 71 yards and scored two touchdowns.

After the 1978 season , Tom Flores took over as coach of the Raiders. Stabler, in turn, moved to the Houston Oilers in 1979 and was replaced by Jim Plunkett . After the 1980 season , the Raiders won the Super Bowl again . Although Casper was transferred from the Raiders to the Houston Oilers during the season, he is listed as a Super Bowl winner in the NFL record books. In the wildcard play-off game of the American Football Conference (AFC), of all things , Casper and his new team met his former team from Oakland . Although he was able to catch three passes from his quarterback Ken Stabler, he was unable to prevent the Houston team from losing 27: 7 .

With the Oilers, Casper could no longer build on his great successes. He moved to the Minnesota Vikings in the 1983 season to end his career with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1984 .

After the career

Dave Casper had already graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in economics . He now works in Lake Elmo , Minnesota as a financial services company.

Honors

Dave Casper played in the Pro Bowl five times and was voted All-Pro four times . Casper is a member of the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team , the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the College Football Hall of Fame .
