Bruce Rankin Matthews (* 8. August 1961 in Raleigh , North Carolina ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of offensive guards, centers and tackles . He played from 1983 to 2001 for the Houston Oilers, Tennessee Oilers and Tennessee Titans in the National Football League (NFL). In his 19-year professional career, during which he never missed a single game, he was elected 14 times to the Pro Bowl and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , but never won the Super Bowl .

College career

Matthews spent his time in college at the University of Southern California , where he played in all three offensive-line positions. In his senior year, he was elected to the All-American selection.

Professional time

In 1983 Matthews was selected in the NFL Draft as the ninth player in the first round by the then Houston Oilers. Here he played his entire professional career. He played in all five positions on the offensive line (99 games as left guard, 67 as right guard, 87 as center, 22 as right tackle and 17 as left tackle). During this time he was instrumental in the success of Earl Campbell , Warren Moon , Eddie George and Steve McNair, among others .

Matthews held the NFL record with 292 starts until Brett Favre hired him in 2010. Throughout his entire NFL career, he never had to miss a game due to injury.

From 1987 to the end of his career in 2001, he was appointed ten times to the All-Pro team and 14 times in a row in the Pro Bowl, a record he holds together with Merlin Olsen . He has been named Offensive Lineman of the Year three times and was selected as a Guard on the NFL's 1990s All-Decade Team . In 2007 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame . His jersey number, the 74, is no longer awarded by the Tennessee Titans.

After the professional career

Matthews has been an assistant coach with the Houston Texans since 2009 .

Personal

Several of the Matthews family members are also successful football players. His older brother Clay Matthews, Jr. also played in the NFL for 19 years for the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons . Her father, William Clay Matthews, Sr. , served several seasons for the San Francisco 49ers in the 1950s . Three of Bruce Matthews' five sons, including Jake Matthews of the Atlanta Falcons, are successful footballers. He is also the uncle of William Clay Matthews III , who plays for the Los Angeles Rams .
