Gary Wayne Zimmerman (* 13. December 1961 in Fullerton , California ) is a former American American football poker players. He played as an offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) with the Denver Broncos .

Player career

College career

Gary Zimmerman was a linebacker who played American football in high school . From 1980 to 1983 he studied at the University of Oregon and played there as an offensive tackle in the offense of the Oregon Ducks . Because of his athletic performance, he was voted All-American and took part in two selection games.

Professional career

In 1984 he was selected by the Los Angeles Express , a team that in the United States Football League , was located (USFL) drafted . At the same time, the New York Giants from the NFL secured the rights to Zimmerman in the NFL Draft . Zimmerman played two years in Los Angeles , where he was responsible, among other things, for the protection of quarterback Steve Young . Since the USFL stopped playing, Zimmerman moved to the Minnesota Vikings after two years of play . The Giants had given Zimmerman to the Vikings and received two additional draft picks from the Minneapolis team . Zimmerman was able to move into the play-offs four times with his team . In 1987 the Vikings lost in the NFC Championship Game to the Washington Redskins with 17:10.

After the 1992 season Zimmerman was given to the Denver Broncos trained by Wade Philipps . Zimmerman played in the Broncos offense, led by John Elway . Two years later, Mike Shanahan took over as coach for the Denver team . Shanahan managed to form a top team from the Broncos. In 1995 the Broncos were able to commit running back Terrell Davis and Zimmerman had the task of clearing Davis's way into the opposing end zone and protecting quarterback John Elway from attacks by the opposing defense during passing moves . In 1996 Zimmerman was able to move into the play-offs for the first time with the Broncos, where they failed early on, however, at the Jacksonville Jaguars with 30:27. The following year the Broncos won their first Super Bowl . After a season with twelve wins and four losses, the Pittsburgh Steelers were initially defeated in the AFC Championship Game with 24:21. After that, the Green Bay Packers could be defeated in Super Bowl XXXII with 31:24. Terell Davis scored three touchdowns in this game .

After 35 games in the USFL and 184 games in the NFL, Zimmerman ended his career after winning the Super Bowl.

Honors

Zimmerman was elected seven times to the Pro Bowl , eight times to the All-Pro and twice to the All-USFL team. He is a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team , the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team , the USFL All-Time Team, the University of Oregon Hall of Fame and, since 2008, the Pro Football Hall of Fame . He is honored on a stadium ribbon at Invesco Field at Mile High , the home of the Broncos.

Off the field

Gary Zimmerman is married and has two daughters. The family lives in Bend , Oregon .
