The pilot Butte in Bend

Bend is a city with 91,122 inhabitants (2016) in Deschutes County in the US state of Oregon . The name of the place, Bend , is derived from the wide arch of the Deschutes River on which the place is located. People who drove along the Deschutes River always said goodbye to the local sawmills with "Farewell Bend" in this curve.

The place is located in the high desert of Oregon and is the most populous city in the region. It is in close proximity to the cascade chain and thus the Mount Bachelor ski area . Especially because of the Mt. Bachelor, Bend lives very strongly from tourism. South of the city is the Newberry National Volcanic Monument , a nature reserve around one of the largest shield volcanoes in the Cascade Range.

history

Up until the winter of 1824, the Bend region was only known to local Indians who hunted and fished there. That year a first group of immigrants came to the area. In the beginning, the region around Bend was in the shadow of the area around La Pine / Rosland , around 50 km further south. Increased white colonization did not begin until the beginning of the 20th century with the establishment of the Pilot Butte Development Company. In 1904 the city was officially founded with 300 inhabitants. It was only through this systematic development that Bend became the economic and administrative center of Deschutes County.

Bend is at 1,104 meters above sea level. The city has an area of ​​about 83.5 square kilometers, of which 82.9 km² is land and 0.6 km² is water. Inside the city lies the Pilot Butte , a 150 m high volcanic cone. The mountain is designated as a State Scenic Viewpoint . Since 1998, the Pilot Butte Challenge has been held annually in September , a fun run over a mile to the summit of Pilot Butte.

Bend lives very much from tourism , but many small companies such as breweries are also employers. The two sawmills Brooks-Scanlon and Shevlin-Hixon , which were among the largest sawmills in the world, have now been closed and demolished, and the Old Mill District shopping and leisure center was built in their place .

Attractions

The old town with numerous houses from the period between 1910 and 1940 comprises a few blocks and has been restored. Outside Bends is the High Desert Museum , a regional museum about the culture, history and nature of the Oregon High Desert with extensive animal enclosures.

The National Park Service lists a total of 30 structures and sites for Bend in the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 5, 2019), including the Old US Post Office .

Bend is in the Bend-LaPine School District. There are four high schools (grades 9-12): Mountain View High School, Summit High School, Mashall High School, and Bend Senior High School. Middle schools (Grades 6-8) include Cascade Middle School, High Desert Middle School, Pilot Butte Middle School, and Sky View Middle School. There are also twelve elementary schools and three magnet schools. There are also numerous private schools.

Bend is also home to the Central Oregon Community College (COCC).

traffic

Bend is connected to US Highways 97 and 20 and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway . Along the north-south axis of the city, a line which runs BNSF Railway which predominantly serves the transport of goods, but also the Amtrak -Personenzug Coast Starlight is traveling. But Bend is not a stop on this route, the nearest train station is Chemult , around 100 km south, from where shuttle buses connect to Bend. With the Bend Municipal Airport , the city ​​has a public airfield , which is owned by the city and located approx. 9 km northeast of the city center. Sports
