The Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint is a 40-hectare state park in the city of Bend in the US state of Oregon . The mountain consists of a 1260  m high extinct volcanic cone, which towers over the surroundings by 150 m. The mountain is overgrown with ponderosa pines , juniper and sagebrush . A 1.5 km long road and several hiking trails lead up the mountain. The top of the mountain serves as a vantage point of the town of Bend and the Cascade Mountains .

history

The mountain got its name from the pioneers in the mid-19th century, as the volcanic cone served as a good guide to a ford through the Deschutes River . On old maps the old volcanic cone is also called Red Butte because of its color, but today the name Pilot Butte has established itself. In 1928, FR Welles, Kempster B. Miller, and Charles A. Brown, citizens of Bend, donated the property to the state in memory of their friend and colleague Terrence Hardington Foley. At the foot of the mountain there is a plaque commemorating Hardington Foley. In recent years the number of visitors has risen sharply, so that currently around 750,000 visitors annually climb the summit.

Trivia

The mountain is a popular destination for joggers and other athletes. Since 1998, the Pilot Butte Challenge has been held annually in September , a fun run over a mile to the summit of Pilot Butte.
