The Guy W. Talbot State Park is a 153-hectare state park in Multnomah County in the US state of Oregon . The park is located on the Historic Columbia River Highway in the Columbia River Gorge . Since it is a little more remote, the park is rarely overcrowded. The main attraction is the Latourell Falls , a 75 m high waterfall of Latourell Creek, which falls in free fall over a moss-covered cliff. A 140 m long path leads from the parking lot to the foot of the falls. There is also a picnic area in the shade of old trees. The park is bordered by the George W. Joseph State Natural Area , and nearby are Rooster Rock State Park and Shepperd's Dell State Park .

Flora and fauna

The picnic area is lined with old specimens of Lawson's cypress , Douglas fir, and other trees. The cool spray of the waterfall causes hot fleabane , a type of flower in the aster family that otherwise only occurs in alpine regions, to grow on the rock .

history

According to a Native American legend , the beautiful wife of the coyote god Speelyai was turned into the waterfall when she tried to leave it. The land around the waterfall once belonged to Portland industrialist Guy Webster Talbot , who owned a summer home here. In 1929 he bequeathed the property to the state of Oregon. The Civilian Conservation Corps laid out the first paths in the park area between 1933 and 1935. The park was given its present size until 1984 through donations from Multnomah County and through purchases.
