Shore Acres State Park is a 301 hectare State Park in Coos County in the US state of Oregon .

geography

The park is located on the Cape Arago Highway about 22 km south of Coos Bay on a sandstone cliff high above the Pacific and contains the 20,000 m² Shore Acres botanical garden.

history

Towards the end of the 19th century, the area was partially used for agriculture. In 1899 the wood baron Louis J. Simpson bought the site and had a luxurious summer house and gardens built there in 1906. The wooden summer house burned down in 1921 and was rebuilt by 1928. Due to financial difficulties, Simpson sold the property to the State of Oregon in 1942. During the Second World War, the site served as a military observation post. After the Second World War, the summer house was in dire need of restoration, so it was demolished in 1948. The lavish garden fell into disrepair until it was restored in 1970. Until 1980, the park was expanded to its present size through acquisitions. The state park has been supported by its own association since the mid-1980s.

Tourist facilities

There is a fee to visit the park. The garden offers walking paths through formal rose, tulip and rhododendron gardens as well as around a Japanese pond. The tallest Monterey pine in Oregon is located near the former gardener's house . From the 20 m high cliff, where the Simpsons summer house once stood, there is a wide view of the ocean, from a viewing platform south of the park you can see seals , California sea lions and northern elephant seals on Simpson Reef , one of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge belonging to the rock reef to be watched. The Shore Acres Holiday Lights are a tourist attraction , when the garden is decorated with thousands of lights and illuminated sculptures between Thanksgiving and New Years.

About 1.5 km north is Sunset Bay , about 1.5 km south of Cape Arago State Park . The three state parks are interconnected by a hiking trail that is also part of the Oregon Coast Trail .
