The Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint is a State Park in Lincoln County in the US state of Oregon . The 13 acre lookout point is located on Highway 101 just north of Depoe Bay . The cliff above a heavily sanded bay made of basalt rocks offers a rewarding vantage point to watch gray whales on their migrations. The point is also considered to be one of the best spots on the Oregon coast for viewing marine birds such as shearwaters , loons , skuas , albatrosses , grebes , pelicans , oystercatchers and alkenbirds . A short, steep path leads to several tide pools . Visiting the park is free of charge.

The bay was previously named Briggs Landing after a family of settlers . Its current name comes from a steam boiler that is visible in a narrow indentation at low tide and comes from the steamer J. Marhoffer that sank on May 18, 1910 after an explosion in the bay .
