The Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint is north of Redmond in the High Desert in the US state of Oregon . It is on the border of the Deschutes and Jefferson Counties . The 34-acre state park overlooks three bridges that cross the Crooked River canyon .
In 1902 a narrow road was built that wound into the gorge and crossed the Crooked River with a wooden bridge at the bottom of the canyon.
The oldest bridge that still crosses the canyon today is the Crooked River Railroad Bridge of the Oregon Trunk Railway , which was built in 1910-1911. The bridge spans the gorge over a length of over 100 m, the height above the water is 96 m.
In 1926 the wooden road bridge was replaced by the Crooked River High Bridge , a steel arch bridge for Highway 97 . The bridge has a total length of 141 meters, a span of 100 m and was designed by the engineer Conde McCullough . The bridge was in use until 2000 when it was replaced by a wider new building. Today it is open to pedestrians and offers a spectacular view of the 100 m deep canyon of the Crooked River.
The third bridge was built from 1997 to 2000. It is 165 m long and was named after Rex T. Barber , an American fighter pilot of World War II who was involved in the downing of the plane of the Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto .
The park area was transferred to the State of Oregon by the Railroad Company between 1925 and 1930. The state park was named after Peter Skene Ogden , a Canadian trapper who led the Hudson's Bay Company's first expedition to the region.
