history

The park's first two acres were donated to the Oregon State Highway Commission on February 15, 1922 by Sarah Helmick and her son James , making it the oldest state park in Oregon. Sarah Helmick was a pioneer who moved from Iowa to Oregon via the Oregon Trail in 1845 . Originally the park served as a campsite for tourists along Highway 99. The park was expanded to its present size by the purchase of an artillery firing range from the Second World War and further donations until 1985 and is now a day trip destination.
