The Crooked River in Smith Rock State Park

The Smith Rock State Park is a state park in Deschutes County of the US state of Oregon . Established in 1959, the 263 hectare park is 14 km northeast of Redmond .

The park protects a ridge of multicolored rock spikes on the Crooked River in the High Desert looming in Oregon. The tuff rocks are of volcanic origin and rise up to 167 m from the valley floor, the highest point is 1024 m high. The monkey face is famous , a rock pillar over 100 m high with overhangs on all sides in the shape of a monkey's head.

The rocks were named after the pioneer John Smith , who is said to have discovered them in 1867. According to another legend, they are named after a soldier named Volk Smith, who is said to have had a fatal accident in a battle with Paiute in 1863. The area of the park was acquired by the state through donations from the city of Redmond and through the purchase of private property between 1960 and 1975. Wild animals include mule deer , golden eagles , prairie falcons , and many other species of birds, such as lazuli finches , yellow-bellied marmots and bats are more difficult to see .

Use of the park is chargeable. The park is considered to be the birthplace of sport climbing in the USA. Today, with over 1800 climbing routes, it is an internationally known destination for sport climbing. There are also bridle paths, mountain bike trails and a total of seven kilometers of hiking trails through the park. There is a picnic area and a simple campsite at the park entrance.

The park has served as a film set several times, e.g. B. for the western With Dynamite and Pious Sayings with John Wayne or for the film Postman by and with Kevin Costner .
