geography

The park extends 14 km along the Pacific coast . In the southern park area there are two sandy beaches, Crescent and Indian Beach , with a total of five kilometers in length with numerous tide pools , the northern section around the 366 m high Tillamook Head headland consists of rocky coast. The lighthouse Tillamook Rock is located on a rock about 1.6 km off the coast . The lighthouse was built in 1881 and was in operation until 1957. In the northeast, the park borders the 245 hectare Elmer Feldenheimer Forest Preserve , whose land was donated in 1978.

Flora and fauna

The area is wooded with a dense rainforest with old Sitka spruce and West American hemlocks . Elk and other deer live in the jungle . California sea lions and numerous species of sea birds live on the rocks off the coast of Ecola Point . In spring, the migration of gray whales is easy to watch from Tillamook Head .

history

On January 3, 1806, the members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in their winter quarters at Fort Clatsop received meat from a stranded whale as a gift from the Clatsop Indians , which offered a welcome change from the constant deer meat. On January 6th, Captain William Clark set out with twelve men to look for the stranded whale and to get more meat and oil for fuel. They reached the whale carcass not far from Tillamook Head. Clark named a stream Ecola Creek after "Ekoli", the Chinook word for whale. The whale had already been cannibalized by the Killmucks Indians, but the expedition was able to buy 150 kilograms of meat and a few liters of whale oil from them and returned to Fort Clatsop on January 10th.

In 1932, a group of citizens donated 91 hectares of land to build the state park. In 1935, Civilian Conservation Corps workers built many of the park's facilities. The warehouse for the workers was on the site of today's parking lot. During the Second World War, a radar station was built at Tillamook Head, the ruins of which can be reached on one of the hiking trails.

Tourist facilities

There is a fee to visit the park. The park has several picnic areas and sanitary facilities. The beaches are ideal for beach walks, the beach of Indian Beach is a Mecca for surfers. The park is crossed by nearly 8 miles of the Oregon Coast Trail, and there are also numerous hiking trails such as the Tillamook Head Trail . The Clatsop Loop Trail is a four kilometer long, partly steep circular route that leads through the jungle to the top of Tillamook Head. There are boards on it with information about nature and the history of the state park. There are primitive huts at Tillamook Head as overnight accommodation for hikers. Apart from these huts, there are no overnight accommodations in the park.

Ecola State Park in the movie
