Fort Clatsop
Fort Clatsop is a log housing estate in the US state of Oregon , southwest of the city of Astoria . It was built by the participants of the Lewis and Clark expedition and served as winter quarters for the expedition participants in the winter of 1805/1806.
history
The name comes from a tribe of the indigenous people of the Pacific coastal region. In the 1950s, a replica of the accommodations and log houses was built. During the summer months, volunteers show visitors everyday life in the fort at the beginning of the 19th century. In 2005 the replica of the fort was destroyed by fire. Due to the misjudgment of a control center employee, who thought the reported smoke development was merely a gathering of fog, the alerting of the responsible fire brigade was delayed and most of them burned down. With public support, however, the reconstruction began immediately and the fort has been open to the public again since December 2006.
