Beach in Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is a small town in Clatsop County in the US state of Oregon . The city is a busy tourist destination in the Pacific Northwest . It has around 1500 inhabitants with 710 households (as of 2000) on an area of 3.9 km² .

Because of its proximity to Portland , Cannon Beach is a popular getaway for residents of the state's largest city.

On January 6, 1806, Captain William Clark and twelve men from the Lewis and Clark Expedition set out from their winter quarters at Fort Clatsop in search of a stranded whale. They reached the whale carcass not far from Tillamook Head. Clark named a stream Ecola Creek after "Ekoli", the Chinook word for whale. On September 10, 1846, the US schooner USS Shark sank while trying to cross the bar of the Columbia River . Part of the wreck was washed ashore south of Tillamore Head . After a winter storm in 1894, one of the schooner's cannons was discovered on the beach. The cannon became privately owned and the site was named Cannon Beach . A replica of the cannon is on display on Highway 101 today , the original is in the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum . The settlement, founded by American settlers towards the end of the 19th century, was first named after the stream Ecola that flows into the Pacific at Arch Cape . Since Ecola was often confused with the place Eola in Oregon, the place was renamed Cannon Beach in 1922.

Cannon Beach is famous for its Haystack Rock landmark near Tolovana Park in the southwest of the town and for its artist colony . Many tourists also come here for whale watching . North of the village is Ecola State Park , about 14 km south of Oswald West State Park .

The tsunami triggered by the Good Friday quake on March 27, 1964 destroyed a bridge on Highway 101 near Cannon Beach. In order to revive tourism in the city, the first sandcastle competition of the continental USA was held on the beach in August 1965. Since then, the sand sculpture competition , Sandcastle Day , has been held annually in summer. The organizer is the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce ).

The National Park Service lists four structures and sites for Cannon Beach on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of January 4, 2019).
