A sand sculpture is a figurative representation made of sand. Sand sculptures can now be assigned to sculpture .

history

The construction of sand sculptures was already used in ancient Egypt , for example to produce models of pyramids for calculating angles and edges. On the American west coast, missionaries used simple sand sculptures and sand pictures to illustrate biblical stories in the 19th century .

As an art form

Sand sculptures were created as art objects on the beaches of the American west coast, especially in San Diego . The first competitions for sand sculptors (called carvers) also took place here. With the technique developed by Gerry Kirk to mix the sand with water and to compact it in wooden forms ( compacting or compacting ), sand sculptures were further developed in two directions:

  1. Due to the higher density and strength of the sand block, details and subtleties could be better represented,
  2. By stacking the forms, enormous dimensions in height and width could be achieved. The world record is currently over 13 m high.

Sand sculpture festivals

Sand sculptures in the compilation of sand sculpture parks are particularly popular with visitors, currently (2017) there are two large sand sculpture festivals in Germany on Usedom in the seaside resort of Ahlbeck and on Rügen in Binz. Both exhibitions are set up annually with a new theme. In Switzerland, an international sand sculpture festival has been held in Rorschach on Lake Constance since 1998. Past exhibitions have been held at the Sandsation sand sculpture festival in Berlin, at SandWorld in Travemünde or at the Ruhr sand festival on Kemnader See.

There are similar festivals around the world, such as B. the sand sculpture festival in Blankenberge, Belgium or the sand sculpture festival in Ashiya , Japan .

In 2006, the sand museum in the Japanese city of Tottori , the world's only museum that exhibits sand sculptures, opened.

As street art

In tourist areas by the sea, sand sculptures have established themselves as a type of street art . The easy availability of sand as a building material and salt water as a binding agent on the one hand, and the large number of potential donors make such places interesting for street art. The use of salt water is necessary because the sculptures disintegrated while drying without being compacted in wooden frames. In Spain, the city of Benidorm is best known for its sand sculpture street art. But sculptures by street artists can also be found in other cities in Spain and on the French Mediterranean coast.

Other uses

Various approaches to management training use sand sculptures as a means of illustrating processes. Their attractiveness is also increasingly being used as an advertising medium in corporate communication.
