Sandsation was an international sand sculpture festival in Berlin that took place in the summer from 2003 to 2010. The highlight of the festival was the annual award of the German Sand Sculpture Prize . In 2008, the USF World Double Championship Award was presented for the first time instead of the German Sand Sculpture Award .

Sandation 2003

In 2003 still at the East Side Gallery in Berlin-Friedrichshain , the festival location has been in the Mitte district at Humboldthafen since 2004 . In 2010 the venue was again between the East Side Gallery and O 2 World Berlin in Berlin-Friedrichshain.

Founders were Johanna Burmeister (production), Honne Dohrmann (GF) and Uwe Schwettmann (GF) - both Kultur Nord managing directors - as well as the Dane Martin Tulinius (artistic director) who died in spring 2016. As a partner from 2004 and Arthur Wetzel was there. After 2006, Anja Smolle took over the shares from Burmeister / Wetzel.

The technique with which the works of art are made is called sand carving. Carefully selected Brandenburg sand was poured, watered and pressed using construction machinery (petrol engine compressors) on approximately 4000 m². No additives other than water are used. The sand-carvers carve out sculptures from the sandstone-like material. They last about 3 months without being significantly damaged by the weather. To protect the surfaces, the sculptures are sprayed with a mixture of wood glue and water. They were also covered with plastic sheeting during heavy rains.

At the fifth festival in 2007, 25 sand sculpture artists ( carvers ) from all over the world took part, who presented works of art up to seven meters high. As in previous years, a sculpture by the Indian carver Sudarsan Pattnaik was particularly impressive in 2007 , a representation of the Taj Mahal that won the audience award. Ulrich Baentsch from Berlin won the “Artists Trophy 2007” for the work “Willkommen im Paradies?”.

The festival grounds were fenced in with opaque bast mats attached to construction fences and could only be entered with an admission ticket. At the end of the term, the Sandsation team, together with the Allgemeine Blinden- und Sehbehindertenverein e. V. (ABSV) offers a special guided tour through the sculpture landscape on one of the last days. Blind and visually impaired visitors were given the opportunity to feel the meter-high sand art works of the festival.

“City Of Future” was the motto for 2009. In the competition for the world championship title in sand sculpture, twelve up to four and a half meters high, urban fantasy worlds competed. Gianni Schiumarini (Italy) won this. With an eight-meter-high show piece, the artists also shared a glimpse into the future - Berlin in the year “2222” was the theme of the community sculpture.

"Head in the sand" was the theme of 2010. The German Sand Sculpture Prize 2010 went to Pavel Mylnikov ( Russia ) for his sculpture "I listen, I hear, I speak".
