Haystack Rock is a 72 m high monolith on the Oregon coast in the northwestern United States. The Haystack Rock got its name because of the similarity to a haystack and is one of the largest coastal monoliths on earth.
Haystack Rock is at the southern end of Cannon Beach and is part of the Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site ; during low tide you can walk to it. Cannon Beach is approximately 130 km (80 mi) northwest of Portland , Oregon's largest city. Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock are popular destinations in Oregon and are conveniently located on US Highway 101 . Haystack Rock, which is used by many seabirds and fish as a breeding and nesting site, is under nature protection and consists mainly of basalt and lava rock.
The monolith was used as a backdrop for the film The Goonies .
