Clatsop County is a county in the northwest of the state of Oregon in the United States . In 2000 35,630 people lived here, in 2005 it was 36,798. The county seat is in Astoria . The county was named after the Clatsop Indians who lived in the area.

The county covers an area of ​​2,809 square kilometers; 667 square kilometers (23.74 percent) of it is water. Clatsop County includes Saddle Mountain State Park , Ecola State Park , Fort Stevens State Park , part of Oswald West State Park and Tenasillahe Island in the Columbia River .

history

The county was formed on June 22, 1844 and named after a Chinook tribe with whom the Lewis and Clark Expedition wintered 1805-06.

The county has a National Memorial , Fort Clatsop , and two National Historic Landmarks , Fort Astoria Site and Lightship Columbia . 61 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 5, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , the county had 35,630 people. There were 14,703 households and 9,454 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.14% white, 0.52% African American, 1.03% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.17% residents from the Pacific island area and 1.64% from others ethnic groups; 2.30% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.48% of the population.

Of the 14,703 households, 28.50% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 50.60% were married couples living together, 9.70% were single mothers. 35.70% were not families. 29.50% are single households and 11.70% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.88 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.70% residents under 18 years of age, 8.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.60% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.60% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.80 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,301 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,575. Males had a median income of $ 32,153 versus $ 22,479 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,515. 13.20% of the population and 9.10% of families are below the poverty line. 16.80% of these were under 18 years of age and 8.00% were 65 years of age or older.
