Grant County is a county in the state of Oregon in the United States of America with 7,445 inhabitants and a population density of 0.6 people per square kilometer (as of 2010). The county seat is Canyon City .

geography

The county is located in northeast Oregon, about 400 km to the north from Washington , about 350 km to the east from Idaho , and has an area of ​​11,731 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Malheur County , Harney County , Crook County , Wheeler County , Morrow County , Umatilla County , Union County, and Baker County .

There are several federally administered nature reserves in Grant County. On the John Day River lies part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and there are three Wilderness Areas : North Fork John Day Wilderness , Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and part of the Black Canyon Wilderness (it continues in Wheeler County).

Large parts of the county consist of federally owned forest areas : Except for the populated valleys, the mountain ranges and hills of the south, east and the center of the county are part of the Malheur National Forests , in the north parts of the Umatilla National Forests protrude into the county.

history

Grant County was formed on October 14, 1864 from parts of Wasco County and Umatilla County. It was named after Ulysses S. Grant , the 18th President of the United States and Commander in Chief of the Union Armies in the American Civil War .

After the first gold discoveries in 1862 at Whiskey Flat, the population rose within 10 days to over 1000 gold prospectors who settled along Canyon Creek . Canyon City was considered the largest city in Oregon at the time.

The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Kam Wah Chung & Co. Museum . Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 9, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , there were 7,935 people in Grant County. 172 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3246 households and 2233 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.69 percent white, 0.10 percent African American, 1.60 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.68 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.70 percent were of mixed race. 2.05 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.89 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.8 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 97.1 men.

The median income for a household in the 32,560 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 37,159 US dollars. Males had a median income of $ 31,834 and females $ 22,253. The per capita income was $ 16,794. 13.7 percent of the population and 11.2 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 16.6 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.2 percent of people over 65 years of age.
