Baker County is a county in the state of Oregon in the United States . The population was 16,471 at the 2000 census; as of 2005 there were 16,287 inhabitants. The county seat is Baker City .

history

The county was founded on September 22, 1862 and named after Senator Edward Dickinson Baker , who died as a commander in the Union Army in the action at Balls Bluff .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 16,741 people. There were 6,883 households and 4,680 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.68% white, 0.23% African American, 1.09% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.04% Pacific island residents and 0.92% others ethnic groups; 1.65% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.34% of the population.
