Malheur County is a county in the state of Oregon in the United States with 31,615 residents. The county seat is in Vale .

history
The county was founded on February 17, 1887 and named after the Malheur River .

The county had a population of 31,615 as of the 2000 census . There were 10,221 households and 7,348 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.78% white, 1.22% African American, 1.02% Native American, 1.96% Asian, 0.08% from the Pacific island area and 17.38% from others ethnic groups; 2.56% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 25.62% of the population.
Of the 10,221 households, 36.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.30% were married couples living together, 10.40% were single mothers. 28.10% were not families. 23.70% are single households and 12.00% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.28.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.60% of residents under 18 years of age, 10.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.20% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.00% between 45 and 64 years of age 13.70% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 116.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 121.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,241 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,672. Males had a median income of $ 25,489 versus $ 21,764 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,895. 18.60% of the population and 14.60% of families are below the poverty line. 25.80% of these were under 18 years of age and 11.60% were 65 years of age or older.
