Multnomah County is a county in the US state of Oregon . It has 735,334 inhabitants (as of 2010), making it the most populous county in the state. The county seat is in Portland , Oregon's largest city.

history

The county was established on December 22, 1854 and named after Chief Multnomah .

There are six National Historic Landmarks in the county . 581 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 18, 2018).

The county covers an area of ​​1,206 square kilometers; 79 square kilometers (6.53 percent) of this is water. This makes it the smallest county in the state.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 660,486 people. There were 272,098 households and 152,102 families. The population density was 586 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.16% white, 5.67% African American, 1.03% Native American, 5.70% Asian, 0.35% residents from the Pacific island area and 4.03% from others ethnic groups; 4.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 7.51% of the population.

Of the 272,098 households, 26.50% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 40.90% were married couples living together, 10.80% were single mothers. 44.10% were not families. 32.50% were single households and 8.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.03.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.30% residents under 18 years of age, 10.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 33.80% between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 96.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,278 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,118. Males had a median income of $ 36,036 versus $ 29,337 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,606. 12.70% of the population and 8.20% of families are below the poverty line. 15.40% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.80% were 65 years of age or older.
