Harney County is a county in the state of Oregon in the United States with 7609 residents. The county seat is Burns .

history

The county was formed on February 25, 1889 and named after William S. Harney . Harney was a cavalry officer and served in the Mexican-American War and the Battle of Ash Hollow , among others . From 1856 to 1860 he commanded the US Army's Department of Oregon .

Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 9, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , the county had 7,609 people. There were 3,036 households and 2,094 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.93% white, 0.13% African American, 3.97% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.07% residents from the Pacific island area and 1.30% from others ethnic groups; 2.09% were from two or more races. 29.40% of the 3,036 households had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.00% were married couples living together, 6.80% were single mothers. 31.00% were not families. 25.90% were single households and 10.20% had someone who was 65 years of age or older.
