Harney County is a county in the state of Oregon in the United States with 7609 residents. The county seat is Burns .

The county, which is one of the largest, has an area of 26,486 square kilometers, of which 239 square kilometers (0.9 percent) is water.
history
The county was formed on February 25, 1889 and named after William S. Harney . Harney was a cavalry officer and served in the Mexican-American War and the Battle of Ash Hollow , among others . From 1856 to 1860 he commanded the US Army's Department of Oregon .
Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 9, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , the county had 7,609 people. There were 3,036 households and 2,094 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.93% white, 0.13% African American, 3.97% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.07% residents from the Pacific island area and 1.30% from others ethnic groups; 2.09% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.15% of the population.
29.40% of the 3,036 households had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.00% were married couples living together, 6.80% were single mothers. 31.00% were not families. 25.90% were single households and 10.20% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.00% residents under 18 years of age, 6.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.10% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.00% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 102.90 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,957 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,917. Males had a median income of $ 27,386 versus $ 21,773 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,159. 11.80% of the population and 8.60% of families are below the poverty line. 12.70% of them were under 18 years of age and 13.90% were 65 years of age or older.
