The county is located in north-central Oregon, about 300 km from Washington and has an area of ​​4,443 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Gilliam County , Morrow County , Grant County , Crook County , Jefferson County, and Wasco Counties .

There are several nature reserves in Wheeler County . In the basin of the John Day River within the county are two of the three parts of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument , as well as two Wilderness Areas : Bridge Creek Wilderness and part of the Black Canyon Wilderness . In the south the Ochoco National Forest protrudes into the county, in the northeast the Umatilla National Forest - two national forests in federal possession.

history

Wheeler County was formed on February 17, 1899 from parts of Grant, Gilliam and Crook Counties. It was named after Henry H. Wheeler , an early settler in the area. As one of the few counties in the United States, the county boundaries have not changed since it was founded.

Two buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 18, 2018).
