Marion County is a county in the state of Oregon in the United States with 315,335 residents. The county seat is Salem , which is also the capital of Oregon. The county is named after the Revolutionary War general Francis Marion .

The county has an area of ​​3,093 km²; of which 26 square kilometers (0.85 percent) are water.

history

The county was founded on July 5, 1843 and was originally called Champoeg . On September 3, 1849, the name was changed to its current name, which goes back to the officer of the Continental Army, Francis Marion .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 284,834 people. There were 101,641 households and 70,437 families. The population density was 93 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.62% white, 0.89% African American, 1.44% Native American, 1.75% Asian, 0.36% residents from the Pacific island area and 10.58% from others ethnic groups; 3.35% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 17.10% of the population.

The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 101.10 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 99.50 males.

The median income for a household in the 40,314 USD , and the median income for a family was 46,202 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,841 versus $ 26,283 for females.
