Georg Altmütter
Georg Altmütter (born October 6, 1787 in Vienna ; † January 2, 1858 there ) was an Austrian technologist .
Life
Georg Altmütter's father was a respected violinist in the Hofburgtheaterkapelle . Georg initially studied philosophy and law at the University of Vienna and Charles University in Prague , but then followed his predilection for natural sciences and technical subjects.
From 1813 to 1815 he was an assistant in the physics subject at the Imperial and Royal Theresian Knight Academy in Vienna. He then did the same service at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna for a few months , where from July 1816 until his death he was professor of mechanical technology , which he raised to science.
Around 1830 the Austrian government started an innovation offensive in order to transform the agricultural state of Austria into a modern, competitive industrial state by means of massive funding of technical research and teaching .
With the “Factory Product Cabinet”, which in 1823 comprised 20,000 sample pieces, and its tool collection, Altmütter created a facility whose importance went far beyond the needs of the Polytechnic.
He was friends with Franz Grillparzer and Joseph Schreyvogel . His tomb is located in the grave grove of Waldmüller Park .
With Karl Karmarsch he wrote the majority of the articles in the "Technological Encyclopedia" begun by Johann Joseph von Prechtl in 1830 .
