Crook County is a county in the state of Oregon in the United States with 19,182 residents, compared with 22,062 in 2005. The county seat is Prineville .

history

The county was founded on October 24, 1882 and named after George Crook , a general in the Union Army .

The county had a population of 19,182 as of the 2000 census . There were 7,354 households and 5,427 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.95% white, 0.04% African American, 1.30% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.03% residents from the Pacific island area and 3.81% from others ethnic groups; 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.64% of the population.

Of the 7,354 households, 32.30% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 61.50% were married couples living together, 8.20% were single mothers. 26.20% were not families. 21.30% are single households and 9.50% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
