Prineville is a city and county seat of Crook County in the US state of Oregon . Your name refers to the first resident dealer, Barney Prine. The population was estimated at 10,370 in 2008.
history
Prineville was founded in 1877 when Monroe Hodges created the original land map for the city. The post office was initially named Prine in April 1871 and changed to Prineville the following year. In October 1880 the city was incorporated. The first high school opened in 1902.
When the railroad tycoons James J. Hill and Edward H. Harriman excluded Prineville from their route in 1911, it threatened to degenerate into a ghost town . In a vote in 1917, citizens of Prineville decided with 355 to 1 votes to build their own railway line and collected the money for the connection to the main line 31 km away.
Thanks to the timber harvest from the nearby Ochoco National Forest , the City of Prineville Railroad has flourished for decades. The profits from the railroad were so great that the city did not levy property taxes between 1964 and 1968. With the decline of Oregon's logging industry, the railroad made a loss of nearly $ 1 million between 2002 and 2004.
The National Park Service lists a total of five buildings for Prineville in the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 5, 2019), including the Lamonta Compound - Prineville Supervisor's Warehouse .
