Coos County is a county in the state of Oregon in the United States . In 2000 62,779 people lived here, in 2005 it was 64,771. The county seat is in Coquille .

history

The county was founded on December 22, 1853 and is named after the Coos Indians .

Demographic data

The original inhabitants of the region were the Coquille , a people of hunters and gatherers belonging to the Athabasques , who handed the land over to the government after disputes with settlers from 1851 to 1855, but without receiving other permanent settlements from Congress as compensation. The tribe, of which about 200 members survived in a reservation on Coos Bay, was forcibly dissolved in 1954 and its identity was not recognized again until 1989. About 350 of the current 1,000 members of the people live in Coos County.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 62,779 people. There were 26,213 households and 17,457 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.97% white, 0.31% African American, 2.41% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.17% residents from the Pacific island area and 1.06% from others ethnic groups; 3.17% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.40% of the population.

Of the 26,213 households, 26.00% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.90% were married couples living together, 9.90% were single mothers. 33.40% were not families. 27.20% were single households and 12.30% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.8.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.90% residents under 18 years of age, 7.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 19.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 96.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.90 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,542 , and the median income for a family was $ 38,040. Males had a median income of $ 32,509 versus $ 22,519 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,547. 15.00% of the population and 11.10% of families are below the poverty line. 19.90% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.40% were 65 years of age or older.

economy

An important traditional branch of the economy is the logging. The Canadian energy and pipeline operator Veresen is currently planning a large gas liquefaction terminal for natural gas from the Rocky Mountains in Coos Bay , which is to be shipped from here to Asia.
