Benton County is a county in the US state of Oregon in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 78,153 people and a population density of 45 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Corvallis . The county is named after Senator Thomas Hart Benton .

The county has an area of 1759 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by Lane County to the south, Linn County to the east, Lincoln County to the west, and Polk County to the north .

The county was founded on December 23, 1847 and named after the politician Thomas Hart Benton , who was a Senator for Missouri for nearly 30 years .

The county had 78,153 people as of the 2000 census . There were 30,145 households and 18,237 families. The population density was 45 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.16% white, 0.84% African American, 0.79% Native American, 4.49% Asian, 0.24% residents from the Pacific island area and 1.92% from others ethnic groups; 2.56% were from two or more races. 4.66% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 30,145 households, 28.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 50.40% were married couples living together, 7.20% were single mothers. 39.50% were not families. 26.10% were single households and 6.70% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.95.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 20.20% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.40% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.30% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 99.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,897 , and the median income for a family is $ 56,319. Males had a median income of $ 42,018 versus $ 29,795 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,868. 14.60% of the population and 6.80% of families are below the poverty line. 10.60% of them were under 18 years of age and 4.90% were 65 years of age or older.
