history

Walter and Thomas Monteith reached the area of today's Albany in the Willamette Valley in 1847 , which until then had been the home of the Kalapuya Indians for about 5000 years . The settlers named the place after the capital of their home state New York , Albany . In 1849 they built the first solid wooden house, which still exists today as a public museum in the city. A post office was set up in early 1850.

Albany was designated the county seat in 1851, and in 1853 the local district court was completed.

From 1860 Albany was a station for regular carriage connections from Portland to Sacramento in California . Goods, consumer goods for the city and passengers were also transported by steamboat across the Willamette River . In 1871 the railway reached the place; in 1910, 28 passenger trains ran daily in different directions from Albany.

The local Lewis & Clark College , which dates back to the Albany College , which opened in 1869, became one of the largest privately operated colleges in Oregon. Portions of Old Town Albany are on the National Register of Historic Places .
