Baker City is the county seat of Baker County in the state of Oregon . The city was named after Edward Dickinson Baker . In 2010 the population was 9,828.
history
Baker City, founded in 1865, grew rather slowly at the beginning. A post office was opened on March 27, 1866, but the town was not registered with the commercial court until 1874.
The Oregon Short Line Railroad came to Baker City in 1884. This led to population growth; in 1900, Baker City was the largest city between Salt Lake City and Portland . In 1910, the residents of Baker City voted for the city name to be shortened to "Baker". The name change took place in 1911, but in 1989 it was reversed after another vote in "Baker City".
In 1918 Baker City hit the headlines when the United States Naval Observatory had its observation bases there during the 1918 solar eclipse.

Baker City is located in a valley between the Wallowa Mountains , the Elkhorn Mountains, and the Blue Mountains . The Powder River flows through the center of town on its way to the Snake River .
Baker City has a semi-arid climate . July and August are Baker City's hottest months. The highest temperature was reached on August 10, 2018 (43 degrees Celsius). The lowest temperature was recorded in December 1978 (-39 degrees Celsius).
