The Blue Mountains (Eng. "Blue Mountains") are a mountain range in the northeast of the state of Oregon and in the southeast of the state of Washington of the United States as part of the Columbia Plateau . The Blue Mountains are one of numerous mountain ranges in the Pacific Northwest of North America. The definition of the Blue Mountains is not universally accepted: the Geographic Names Information System of the USGS one added every mountain Northeast Oregon, and their foothills to Washington until the Snake River , but without the Wallowa Mountains in the far northeast of the area. The Peakbagger database delimits mountain ranges known as the South Columbia Plateau in the south , so that Blue Mountains only designate the northern part there.

According to the definition of peak dredger, the area is 49,770 km², of which 82% is in Oregon and 18% in Washington. Its highest mountains are the Elkhorn Crest with the 2763 m high Rock Creek Butte . The Strawberry Mountain ( 2755  m ) is the next highest mountain in the region outside the Elkhorn Crest, but he is just as defined by the USGS in the Blue Mountains, Peak excavators lists him as the highest mountain in South Columbia Plateau . Large parts of the mountains belong to the national forests of the Umatilla National Forest , Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and Malheur National Forest .

Larger rivers that flow through the mountain range are the Grande Ronde River and parts of the John Day River .

The US Highway 26 leads on a mountain pass ( Blue Mountain Pass ) up to an altitude of 1545  m in the south of the mountains. The Oregon Trail crossed the mountain range in the 19th century.
