National Wild and Scenic River

The Powder River is an approximately 180 km long tributary of the Snake River in the northeast of the US state Oregon . It drains part of the Columbia Plateau to the east of the Blue Mountains .

The river has its source in the southern Blue Mountains along Elkhorn Ridge , approximately 20 miles west of Baker City in Baker County . The upper reaches are in the Umatilla National Forest . Its confluence with the Snake River takes place on the state border with Idaho , above Brownlee Dam .

Nearly 12 miles of the river, from Thief Valley Dam to the Oregon Route 203 bridge , is recognized as a National Wild and Scenic River in the scenic category.
