history

In 1871 the US Lighthouse Service built a lighthouse on Yaquina Bay, but it was abandoned in 1874 in favor of the Yaquina Head lighthouse . The area around the old lighthouse was transferred to the State of Oregon in 1934 and 1971 by the Lighthouse Service. In the 1930s, a division of the Civilian Conservation Corps established paths and other facilities in the park area. The jetties that protect the entrance to Yaquina Bay from the waves were built between 1888 and 1896. The north of these piers is in the park.
