The Oregon coast (Engl. Oregon Coast ) is the geographical term for the coast of the US state of Oregon on the Pacific Ocean ( Pacific Coast ). Since the Oregon Beach Bill was introduced in 1967, all access has been made available to the public.

Most of the road no. 101 ( Highway 101 ) runs along the coast.

geography

The coastal sections are traditionally divided into three parts:

  • North Coast ( The North Coast ) from the Columbia River to Neskowin
  • Central Coast ( The Central Coast ) from Lincoln City to Florence
  • South Coast ( The South Coast ) from Reedsport to the California border.

Northern part

Sometimes the term Oregon Coast is only used for the northern part of the coastline, especially for the places around Seaside . In the latter understanding of the term u. a. the following places on the Oregon coast (north to south):

There are no transport ports there due to the lack of water depth, but there are a few marinas. Especially between Depoe Bay and Newport, the difference in altitude between the road leading up the cliffs and the sea is very large. The closer you get to the city of Florence, the less the difference in altitude is. Shortly before the city of Florence coming from the north, the road leaves the Pacific and now runs more in a wooded area. Here you can already see tendencies that the differences in altitude are no longer so immense and that the cliffs are slowly turning into dunes. Due to the remoteness of metropolitan areas (at least 100 km), the places are rather rustic and form a mixture of fishing village, tourist town and artist colonies . The beaches are made of sand . The Oregon Dunes , a 50-kilometer-long dune area, the highest peaks of which are 150 meters, extend between Coos Bay and Florence .

A special feature is whale watching in autumn and spring from stilt houses or from offshore peninsulas such as Yaquina Head . The Yaquina Head Lighthouse offers a good overview of the coastal strip. The coast is one of the most popular destinations for day or weekend trips in summer. Especially Americans from the western states can be found here as vacationers.

Southern part

The southern part is rocky and beachless. To the south is a sea lion rock ( Seal Rock State Wayside ). Wild sea lions and tidal fountains can be seen there.

Typical of the Oregon coast are the picturesque heuhaufenähnlichen single rock ( Haystacks ) coming out of the sea stand out.

Due to its location on the Pacific Ocean, this coast is at risk from tsunamis .
