history

Yaquina Head Lighthouse on the Yaquina Head Peninsula, view from Salal Hill

The tower was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers between 1871 and 1873 . The relatively long construction period results from problems with the supply of building materials and delays due to the weather in winter. Much building material was transported by boat and unloaded on the nearby beach, two boats sank. The tower was electrified in 1939 and automated in 1966. Before automation, the tower was usually manned by three lighthouse keepers who were employed by the US Lighthouse Service . In 1939 the United States Coast Guard had taken over management. During the Second World War , 17 soldiers were stationed at Yaquina Head as a lookout for enemy ships. Like the Yaquina Head peninsula, the tower has also been under the protection and administration of the Bureau of Land Management as an Outstanding Natural Area since 1948 . The tower has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993 . In 2006, the tower and home were renovated for approximately one million US dollars.

technology

Fresnel lens and light bulbs in the tower

The French Fresnel lenses originally installed in 1868 are used as optics . Until the electrification, the light was generated with the help of an oil burner from sunset to sunrise. Today a 1000 watt halogen bulb from General Electric provides the light day and night. The lighthouse has the following flashing frequency: two seconds on, two seconds off, two seconds on, 14 seconds off.

use

There is a fee to visit the peninsula, and parking spaces and toilets are available. The tower has been open to the public again since 1993, and an entrance fee is required for this too. There are several hiking trails and viewpoints on the peninsula. With over 400,000 visitors a year, the lighthouse is the most visited of its kind in Oregon. The lighthouse keeper's house now serves as a visitor center. Another lighthouse, the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse , is located on Yaquina Bay about 3 miles south in Newport.
