history

Before the white colonization, numerous Native American tribes lived on the Oregon coast. Since 1855 the area of today's Lincoln City belonged to the Coast (Siletz) reservation . By the Dawes Act of 1887, the reservation was released for settlement. The first settlers settled along the Siletz and Salmon Rivers and lived on the remote coast from agriculture, fishing and hunting.
At the beginning of the 20th century, five settlements developed in what is now the urban area, which were named Cutler City , Delake , Nelscott , Oceanlake and Taft . With the construction of the new Highway 101 in the 1930s, which ran through all five settlements, the region was opened up for tourism, so that the places competed for visitors with each other and with other settlements along the coast. In order to ensure the municipal administration more effectively and the maintenance of the fire brigade, police and other institutions better, there were various attempts to merge the five settlements. It was not until March 3, 1965 that Lincoln City was finally founded through the merger of the towns of Delake, Oceanlake and Taft and the unincorporated settlements of Cutler City and Nelscott. Since the new city should not bear the name of one of the previous settlements, the new city name was determined in a student competition in which the students from the local schools could take part.
The city is now managed by a full-time city manager. The honorary mayor and the city council are elected for four years.

education

Lincoln City has two elementary schools, two high schools, and a community college. There are also several private schools.

Economy and tourism

Due to its geographical location and proximity to the Pacific, the place is a popular tourist destination. In the summer months, in addition to the approximately 8,000 residents, around 30,000 tourists live in Lincoln City. The wide, always windy sandy beach offers ideal conditions for kite flying. The D River State Recreation Site hosts a kite festival twice a year and has several kite equipment dealers in town, which is why Lincoln City calls itself the Kite Capital of the World .

In addition to numerous restaurants and shops, there has also been the Chinook Winds Casino on the northern edge of the village since 1995 . The casino has 900 employees, making it the city's largest employer. There is a large outlet center with 60 stores on Highway 101.
