The Salmon River is a river in the US state of Oregon .

It flows through the Oregon Coast Range and is not to be confused with the Salmon River of the same name , which rises at Mount Hood in Oregon. The river is considered the border between the Northern and Central Oregon Coast Ranges .

geography

The Salmon River, just 38 km long, rises east of Lincoln City on the border between Lincoln and Polk Counties . It flows partially through the Siuslaw National Forest and flows south of Cape Cascade Head about six kilometers north of Lincoln City into the Pacific Ocean. The river estuary forms an approximately 177 hectare wetland through an upstream sandbank. Six kilometers above the estuary is a fish farm near Otis , from which thousands of king and silver salmon are released every year . The river is also a spawning area for rainbow trout . Because of the fish farm, the lower reaches are considered good fishing waters for salmon and rainbow trout.

The wide estuary is a habitat for numerous water birds such as belt fishermen , goosander and buffalo head ducks . Other bird species include the marsh wren , red-shouldered blackbird , song bunting , North American bittern, and yellow-throated willow . Hen harriers and bald eagles occur among birds of prey .
