Gregor Hübner (born May 23, 1967 in Stuttgart ) is a German composer , violinist and pianist who is best known for his jazz projects .

Hübner, who grew up on Lake Constance, studied after his Abitur at the Ravensburger Spohngymnasium at the music academies of Vienna and Stuttgart with Florian Zweiauer and Gerhard Voss classical violin as well as jazz piano and composition. He completed his studies in New York City at the Manhattan School of Music in 1996 with a master's degree and honors .

Hübner has worked with the Tango Five group since 1985 , which performed at the 1992 World Exhibitions (Seville) and 2000 (Hanover) as well as at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, as well as at the 1998 Tango festivals in Montevideo and Buenos Aires . (With two of the musicians from this ensemble, Bobbi Fischer and his brother Veit Hübner , he is currently working in the band Berta Epple .)

Hübner played in the Dominic Duval String Quartet a . a. Pieces by Cecil Taylor . Between 1995 and 1999 he was a member of the Philharmonia Virtuosi chamber orchestra . For this orchestra, Hübner composed his orchestral composition “In Memoriam Bela”. His work "New York Stories" was performed in April 2004 by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Hübner's compositions also include “Bach21”, premiered at the European Music Festival 2005 on behalf of the Stuttgart Bach Academy, and “Salve Regina” for the Ochsenhausen State Academy .

Since 1996 he has been working with the jazz pianist Richie Beirach . The joint CD "Round about Federico Mompou " (with George Mraz ) was nominated for a Grammy in the category "Best Latin Jazz Album". He recorded the lyrical album “Beauty” with Charlie Mariano and Beirach, and recorded songs and chansons by Kurt Weill with the singer Jutta Czurda . Hübner continued to record CDs with his quintet, which included Harvie Swartz , Tim Hagans , Andi Maile , Holger Nell (alternating with Patrick Manzecchi at times ). Since 2002, Hübner has directed the Gregor Huebner New York NRG Quartet with Luis Perdomo , Hans Glawischnig and Billy Hart ; He was also a member of the New York Latin bands "Jovenes del Bario", "Son Radical" and "Eye Contact". He also worked for Dianne Reeves and Uri Caine . With the string ensemble Sirius Quartet , which operates between classical and jazz , he has performed his own works as well as compositions by Nick Didkovsky , Elliott Sharp , Billy Martin , Nancy Magarill , John Patitucci , Uri Caine and Richard Einhorn .

As a lecturer, Hübner gave workshops at the music academies in Bremen, Hanover, Dresden, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Cologne, the Lausanne Conservatory and the Manhattan School of Music.

Prizes and awards

In 1987 he and the Bel Art Trio, which still works sporadically today, won first prize for the best band at Jugend Jazzt Baden-Württemberg with his brother Veit Hübner on double bass and Patrick Manzecchi on drums. In 1998 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize.
