Dominic Duval

Dominic Duval (* 27. April 1945 in New York City ; † 22. July 2016 ) was an American jazz - bassist and band leader of modern creative and avant-garde jazz .

Life

Duval learned the saxophone from the age of ten ; since 1958 he has concentrated on the double bass , which he has learned autodidactically . He worked on the fringes of jazz since the 1960s. It was not until the 1990s that he achieved international fame through his collaboration with Cecil Taylor , which lasted until 2005 and was reflected in the Cadence album "Qu'a - Live at the Iridium", and his participation in Joe McPhee's band ("Seiro ", 1998). In addition, Duval has recorded a number of albums under his own name since the mid-1990s, including the production "The Navigator" for the Leo Records label with his string ensemble consisting of violinist Jason Hwang , viola player Ron Lawrence and cellist Tomas Ulrich . He performed with his ensemble in 1998 at the New York Knitting Factory , expanded to include the wind players Joe McPhee and Mark Whitecage . In 2004 appeared in collaboration with Jimmy Halperin and Jay Rosen album Joy and Gravitas , most recently in 2006 the album Dominic Duval String Quartet- Mountain Air , with Ivo Perelman, the duo album Some Calling and Jimmy Halperin, the Monk - Tribute album Monkinus . In 2007 he worked with Joe McPhee and Jay Rosen in Trio X . He was also involved in numerous record sessions for the jazz label Cadence and CIMP , on which he featured musicians such as Andrew Cheshire , Chris Kelsey , Paul Lytton , Ivo Perelman , Herb Robertson , Glenn Spearman , Steve Swell , Mark Whitecage, Joseph Scianni and Nils Wogram on their albums accompanied. He also played with Nora McCarthy .

Duval died after a long battle with mycosis fungoides .
