Chris Kelsey (born June 5, 1961 in Bangor (Maine) ) is an American soprano saxophonist and composer of modern creative jazz and free improvisational music as well as music journalist.

Life

Chris Kelsey's father was a saxophonist and music teacher, his mother a librarian. He grew up in Oklahoma and studied music education at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree. During this time he played in various R&B, rock and jazz formations around Oklahoma City . In the early 1990s he moved to New York City and worked on a number of albums in the stylistic range from post-bop to free improvisation, which were created in particular for the labels CIMP and Knitting Factory ; he can be heard on recordings by Steve Swell ( Observations , 1996) or Lou Grassi . Since the beginning of the 1990s he has also recorded a number of albums under his own name for the avant-garde label CIMP and Cadence Jazz Records , on which musicians such as Joe McPhee , François Grillot , Ken Filiano , Dominic Duval , David Hofstra , Jackson Krell , Jay Rosen , Grassi and Swell contributed. In addition to his musician activities, he began a second career as a music journalist and critic; he writes u. a. for a variety of publications, such as a. for the jazz magazines Cadence , Jazziz and JazzTimes as well as for the All Music Guide .
