Jimmy Halperin
Jimmy Halperin (* 1958 in Queens , New York City ) is an American saxophonist (tenor and soprano saxophone) and composer of avant-garde jazz and new improvisational music .
Life
Jimmy Halperin has been interested in the music of Lennie Tristano since the 1970s ; in his early years he had lessons from Tristano himself and from Sal Mosca . The first recordings were made when Halperin played in the Warne Marsh Quintet in March 1986 ( Back Home on CrissCross). Since 1982 Halperin worked with the bassist Dominic Duval ; The first joint recordings were not made until 2003.
In 1997 Halperin recorded his first album under his own name on the Zinnia label : a duet dedicated to Tristano with Sal Mosca ( Psalm ). In 1998 he was a member of the Thomas Andersen Quintet (NOR Records), in 2001 he recorded in a trio with bassist Don Messina and drummer Bill Chattin for Cadence Jazz Records . During this time Halperin also worked as a session musician with Duval and Jay Rosen at CIMP .
Only in 2003 was it closer cooperation in the CIMP album Joy and Gravitas led to interpretations of jazz standards such as A Night in Tunisia , Love for Sale , My Funny Valentine , Do not Explain , Naima and 'Round Midnight contained , followed by the duo album Monkinus by Halperin and Duval on the CIMP label . In 2009 Halperin and Duval continued their preoccupation with the music Thelonious Monk with the album Monk Dreams , which was released on the Lithuanian label NoBusiness Records . In June 2009 they performed at the Villach Jazz Festival.
Halperin also worked with the pianist Andreas Schmidt , with Axel Hagens Stringproject and in a duo with the guitarist Joe Giglio .
