Axel Hagen

Axel Hagen (* 1963 in Karlsruhe ) is a German jazz musician ( guitar , arrangement ).

Live and act

Hagen, who grew up in Bonn, came to the guitar at the age of 15 and received both jazz and classical lessons. Between 1985 and 1990 he studied at the Hilversum Conservatory with Peter Nieuwerf and Wim Overgaauw , but also had lessons with Barry Harris , Jimmy Raney , Rob Langereis and Frans Elsen .

Between 1990 and 1996 Hagen was a member of the rhythm section of the Metropole Orkest . With this orchestra under the direction of Rob Pronk , Bill Holman and Chuck Israels he can be heard on radio recordings and albums with internationally known jazz musicians such as Tommy Flanagan , Lou Levy , Clark Terry , Lee Konitz , Claudio Roditi , Bill Perkins and Tom Harrell .

Hagen continued to lead bands with Dutch musicians such as Frans Elsen, Ferdinand Povel , Rob Langereis, Victor Kaihatu and Marco Kegel who performed all over Europe. He also recorded several albums under his own name for the Dutch record label Blue Jack Jazz Records , which he recorded with Marco Kegel, Jimmy Halperin , the Gustav Klimt String Quartet and Lee Konitz and the Dutch jazz legends Frans Elsen and Jacques Schols . He also appears with the New Market Quartet with Paul van der Feen on the alto saxophone and in combos with Olaf Tarenskeen, with whom he has also recorded an album. In 2019, Verona Sessions was released as a duo album with pianist Paolo Birro .

Hagen has been teaching jazz guitar at the University of Music Würzburg since 2009 together with Michael Arlt , with whom he also performs in a duo.
