Ferdinand Povel (born February 13, 1947 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch jazz saxophonist (tenor, alto).

Live and act

Povel won the competition at the Loosdrecht Jazz Festival in 1964 . In 1969 he toured with Dusko Goykovich's “Summit Quintet” (in which drummer Philly Joe Jones also played). In 1971 he jumped in with the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band. From 1971 to 1985 he toured regularly with Peter Herbolzheimer's “Rhythm Combination and Brass” big band. In 1972 he played for a year in Kurt Edelhagen's big band . In 1973 he toured the United States with Maynard Ferguson . In 1978 he became both first tenor and alto with the Dutch big band “Skymasters”. He also played with the Metropole Orkest , the “Concert Jazz Band” (today Jazz Orchester of the Concertgebouw ) and in 1982/3 in the octet of the pianist Cees Slinger , with whom he also performed a lot in his quartets and quintets. He played u. a. with Woody Shaw , Jimmy Knepper , the "George Gruntz Band", Dexter Gordon , Benny Bailey , Philip Catherine , Laura Fygi , Ack van Rooyen , Piet Noordijk , Slide Hampton , the pianists Frans Elsen , Rein de Graaff and Tine Schneider and the guitarist Wim Overgaauw .

From 1978 he also taught as a lecturer in The Hague , Rotterdam , Hilversum and later mainly at the Amsterdam Conservatory .

Prizes and awards

In 1981 he won the award for best soloist from Nordring Radio; In 2011 he received the Boy Edgar Prize .
