Wim Overgaauw
Wim Overgaauw (born November 23, 1929 in Hilversum ; † November 30, 1995 there ) was a Dutch jazz guitarist . He is considered the most influential musician on his instrument in the Netherlands.
Life
Overgaauw began as a violinist and also played in a string orchestra for two years. Then he switched to guitar and performed in American military clubs with Nick Vollebregt . He is best known for his membership in the Pim Jacobs trio with singer Rita Reys in the 1960s; he also played with Wessel Ilcken in the 1950s and later led his own groups. But he also recorded with Lee Konitz , for example, and accompanied Cannonball Adderley , Sam Jones and Jimmy Raney . For many years he was a lecturer at the conservatory in Hilversum , where u. a. Jesse van Ruller and Maarten van der Grinten were among his students. By nature modest, he recently avoided public appearances. In an interview in 1994 he said that he was partly more influenced by his students and younger guitarists like David Gilmore from Steve Coleman's band . He also composed music for film and television, gave guitar workshops and wrote a guitar textbook, "The European Jazz Guitar".
