Jacobs came from a musical family - his father was an amateur pianist - and began playing the recorder at the age of eleven, on which he soon played the pieces by Charlie Parker . He then switched to the alto saxophone and at the age of 15 to the double bass; he received his training on this instrument from Cees de Ligt, one of the bassists of the Concertgebouw Orchestra . From 1955 he played modern jazz in the trio of his brother Pim Jacobs (with the drummer Cees See ). The trio made recordings with Bud Shank and Bob Cooper , but also with Tony Scott and Herbie Mann . In 1957, Ruud Jacobs was a member of Marshall Brown's International Youth Band , which performed with Louis Armstrong at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival . He then played with Armstrong as part of the Newport International Band during the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels. From 1957 to 1960 he was voted best bass player in the readers' poll of Rhythme magazine .

At that time he played a lot with Rita Reys and Wessel Ilcken . As a companion to Rita Reys, he performed at the Antibes Jazz Festival and continued to appear in his brother's trio, where guitarist Wim Overgaauw had now replaced drummer Cees See. The trio played at all major European jazz festivals in the 1960s and also accompanied many American guest soloists. On tour and in the record studio, Ruud Jacobs has worked with musicians such as Johnny Griffin , Kenny Clarke , Bud Powell , Bill Evans , Clark Terry , Stan Getz , Sonny Rollins , Gerry Mulligan , Art Farmer , Eddie Daniels , Tony Bennett and Sarah Vaughan . For a short time he had his own combo with Albert Mangelsdorff , Dusko Goykovich and Bernt Rosengren , with whom he performed at Storyville in Frankfurt.

From the 1970s he worked as a record producer, first for CBS , then for Phonogram and Universal . He produced Claus Ogerman , Thijs van Leer , Rita Reys, Toots Thielemans , Jan Akkerman , Jaap van Zweden and Laura Fygi as well as André Rieu . In the jazz field he appeared again in a quintet with Rita Reys and Ferdinand Povel , for example at the North Sea Jazz Festival .

Jacobs was married to the singer Liselore Gerritsen and is the father of the pianist Jeroen Jacobs. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, he received the Order of Orange-Nassau in the Amsterdam Bimhuis .
