Maarten van der Grinten

Maarten van der Grinten (born December 19, 1963 in Geleen ) is a Dutch jazz guitarist and composer.

Van der Grinten began playing drums at the age of nine and guitar from the age of twelve, which he deepened during his studies from 1982 to 1987 at the Hilversum Conservatory with Wim Overgaauw (degree “summa cum laude”). In 1987 he won the Loosdrecht Festival Prize and in 1988 received a scholarship from the Dutch Ministry of Culture to continue his studies in New York at the Manhattan School of Music . He has played with jazz musicians such as Ack van Rooyen , Toots Thielemans , Clark Terry , John Engels and accompanied singers such as Greetje Kauffeld (on her album "The real thing" 1994), Francien van Tuinen (on her album "Muzyka" 2005), Laura Fygi (on her album "The Best Time of the Year" 2004, "Turn out the Lamplight" 2005) and the Portuguese singer Cristina Branco (with Richard Galliano and Michael Moore at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2005 and 2006 in the Concertgebouw with the pianist Mario Laginha ). He has performed with the WDR Big Band , the Willem Breuker Kollektief , the “Metropole Orkestra” and the Concertgebouw Jazz Orchestra (and its predecessor, the New Concert Bigband), for which he also composes.

He is co-leader of "Digd´Diz" (with Jan Menu on baritone saxophone and Jan Voogd on bass, album "Dig d´Diz meets the Mondriaan String Quartet" 1997 by BV Haast) and the "Van der Grinten-Herman" quartet with saxophonist Benjamin Herman (with Joe Machtel on bass and Henk Zomer on drums, albums "Between a dog and a lamppost" 1992, "Psychodixie for C-Melody Saxophone" 1994, "Lost Languages" 1998, "A course and a sigh “2006). He also plays in a duo with guitarist Jesse van Ruller and played with the Brazilian group “Dirindi” (on their album “Cantar do Jobim” 2004). With U. a. He played Doug Raney , Louis Stewart , Frédéric Sylvestre and Heiner Franz in the "European Jazz Guitar Orchestra" (album of the same name in 1993).

He teaches at the Hochschule der Künste in Amsterdam (the new name of his old school, the Hilversum Conservatory), where he heads the jazz guitar section.
