Cristina Branco (* 1972 in Almeirim , Ribatejo ) is a Portuguese fado - singer .

Career

Cristina Branco no longer comes from the unbroken tradition of Fado. According to her own admission, she was brought to fado by records by Amália Rodrigues , which her grandfather gave her for her 18th birthday.

She originally wanted to be a journalist. Musically she was more interested in the work of singers like Billie Holiday , Ella Fitzgerald , Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell . The discovery of Fado under the impression that Amália's voice had left on her then heralded her career as a singer. After a brief appearance on a Portuguese television program, she was invited to the Netherlands , where she gave her first public concert in 1996 in Zaal 1 in Amsterdam . The recordings of her appearance there on days 25. – 27. April 1997, on the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the Carnation Revolution , are self-published as CD in 1998. As a result, interest in Cristina Branco increased, also in the context of a general renewed interest in Fado. She goes on concert tours across Europe and North America and records other CDs.

According to her own understanding, she is not a pure fadista , but a singer who also sings fado. For example, with the album Abril she is recording new songs by José Afonso , setting works by Jan Jacob Slauerhoff on O Descobridor , and crosses both styles with Fado Tango .

Again and again she expands her repertoire beyond the traditional boundaries without giving up the connection to the original Fado. One of her numerous projects in January 2019 was the program "Fado & more: Cristina Branco", which she recorded with the hr big band on January 17 and 18, 2019 in the hr broadcasting hall in Frankfurt am Main under the direction of Mário Laginha and which was then repeatedly broadcast on television.
